European Student Symposium on Anatomical Research 2024

On the 10th of October 2024, The Medical University of Varna hosted the European Student Symposium on Anatomical Research. This event that was at its third edition, was for the first time run in person after the first two editions which in 2022 and 2023 ran online.

The president of EFEM Prof. Fabio Quondamatteo and Prof. Tontchev with all presenters.

It was a wonderful opportunity for 21 talented young researchers in Anatomy to present their work in an international platform. The presenters were nominated by diverse Anatomy society in Europe affiliated with EFEM and represented institutions from 12 different European countries. The quality of research presented was impressive and gives good hope for the future of anatomical research in Europe.

As in the previous editions, there were awards for 3 categories were: Category A (Classical Research Talk), Category B (Preliminary Results and Outlook), and Best Image Award.

The president of EFEM Prof. Fabio Quondamatteo and Prof. Tontchev with the awardees.

The awardees were:

Marco Gonzalez Lopez, Czech Anatomical Society – Winner Category A

Ana Rita da Costa Garcia, Portuguese Anatomical Society, and Grischa Ott, Swiss Society for Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology – ex aequo runner up Category A

Maya Stelzer – Dutch Anatomical Society – Winner Category B

Carolina Adelaide Major Rodrigues, Portuguese Anatomical Society – runner up Category B

Franka Lenzing, Hungarian Anatomical Society – Best Image Award winner

3D reconstruction of an African elephant's hindfoot using CT, by Franka Lenzig. Pathological foot lesions are the leading cause of euthanasia in captive elephants. This study created a 3D model of an elephant's right hindfoot using CT scans. The resulting model offers novel anatomical information for veterinarians. The image is a screenshot of the 3D Slicer, the software used for processing.

Ivan Tsvetanov Ivanon – Best Image Award runner up

Special congratulations to all awardees!

The whole EFEM Board would like to thank Prof Anton Tontchev from the Medical University of Varna and his team for hosting the event and the Medical University of Varna as well as the Anatomy Societies affiliated with EFEM for supporting it.

Cosmic Zen by Ivan Tsvetanov Ivanon. Folia of a lateral section of conditional TelCre Pax6 flox flox knockout mouse cerebellum are presented on the image. AF6000 fluorescence microscope system with HC PL FLUOTAR 10.0x0.30 DRY objective and DFC 350 FX R2 camera for fluorescence analytical imaging were used. The antibodies applied in the immunofluorescent staining technique are NeuN (stains granule, basket, stellate cells), Calbindin (marking Purkinje cells) and DAPI (staining all cell nuclei). Legend: ML (Molecular Layer), GL (Granular Cell Layer), PCL (Purkinje Cell Layer), WM (White Matter), Arrow points a Purkinje cell

Many congratulations to all who presented and well done!
