EFEM in the XXIX International Symposium on Morphological Sciences (ISMS 2025)

For a few days, Lisbon was an open city for anatomists. On July 24th, the XXIX International Symposium on Morphological Sciences (ISMS 2025) ended after four days of intensive communications and plenary conferences. During these four days, people from almost 50 countries shared their knowledge and learned from their colleagues some vanguard concepts in anatomy-related topics.

Professor Fabio Quandamatteo, our current president, and Elisabeth Eppler, the future president of EFEM, at the presentation of the ISMS 2025.

The meeting was held at NOVA Medical School in the center of Lisbon, and several national and international organizations, such as the Portuguese Anatomical Society, Portuguese Medical Association, the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists, and EFEM, supported it.

On July 24th EFEM organized an oral communications session performed by three young anatomists who have been awarded in EFEM’s Student Symposiums in recent years. The moderator of the EFEM session was carried out by Alexandra Brito and the members of EFEM Elisabeth Eppler, Fabio Quandamatteo, and Friedrich Paulsen were the session chairs.

The first presentation was carried out by Cian O´Connor, a postdoc researcher awarded in 2022. In his topic called “Biomimetic iPSC seeded tissue scaffolds for spinal cord applications”, Cian talked to audience some advances in cell culturing and the use of scaffolds with applications in recovery treatments after spinal cord injury, a promising advance in regenerative medicine. The rest of his works can be found here.

The second speaker was Marcos González López, a young postdoc researcher who explained some key events related to the development of teeth in his presentation called “Dynamics and Control of Continuously Growing Mouse Teeth”. You can read one of his works here.

Our third speaker was Elizabeth Sainbury, a postdoc awarded in 2023. Her topic, “Advances in Tissue Engineering for Cancer Modelling and Regenerative Medicine,” brought the audience some news regarding innovations in tissue engineering that have applications in cancer medicine. One of her published works can be found here.

Congrats all for the presentations, and see you in future events.
